Your Questions About Migraine Medications Generic

David asks…

Shaky and lightheaded after taking migraine medication?

First let me start off by saying that I stopped drinking caffeine in March 2010 because my addiction to caffeine was actually causing me to have migraine headaches if I didn’t drink enough caffeine during the day. Now I try to avoid taking migraine medication at all costs because I obviously don’t like what it does to my body. I still get migraines every now and then and today when I took the correct dose of a generic migraine relief medication containing acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine I got shaky and lightheaded. Is this normal? I’m 24 years old and I’ve suffered from migraines for about eight years now. I also get a migraine on the left side of my head particularly in the back and I’ve read that it’s normal to have them on one side or the other, is this true? Sometimes it feels like my brain is bleeding under the skull and after the migraine starts to subside it feels like my brain is bruised. Is this a normal sensation?

Pat answers:

Yes, it is normal – your body no longer has a tolerance built up to the caffeine and it is hitting you hard. If you took 2 tablets, which I believe is the prescibed dosage, it will be even worse. When I take Excedrin, I only take one – and I have a tolerance for caffeine. If I take 2 of them, I tremble and almost pass out.

Your brain sensations are about normal. The location of migraines CAN vary by individual. Have you been to a neurologist? If not, you should see one. They can do an MRI to get a baseline and be sure there are organic reasons for the migraines – and then if they get worse, they can double-check and see if there are any changes, etc.

Migraines can be triggered by many things, so you might want to start seeing if you can figure out what is doing it. Hormonal changes are probably the #1 reason in women, so if you are pregnant or on birth control pills, that might be a part of it. Chemicals are another big factor. Artificial sweetners, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, nitrates, sulphites, phosphates – all can do it. As can many seemingly ‘good’ foods, liked aged cheeses, pickles, even meats, if they’ve been injected with things, as many are. Read labels, and keep track.

Good luck.

Ken asks…

What generic medication can I take instead of topamax?

I not only have difficulties with migraines, but I have headaches 24/7. Seizures are not an immediate issue for me. But money is. I am about to lose my insurance and am on 50mg of topamax a day. That’s $340.00 a month. Any suggestions? Natural or generic.

Pat answers:

Take a look at http://the-drug-store.com/?product=topamax for a generic of topamax at a site that I use.

Not sure what dose aor strength you need but the price is going to be much lower than the 340 you are talking about

Daniel asks…

Migraine headache while pregnant. I’m really worried. ?

Okay, so last night after my husband’s grandmother’s viewing I got this terrible migraine. So bad that I had to cover my eyes in the car because the lights on the interstate were enough to make me sick to my stomach.

We finally get home after the hour long drive home. My head hurts so bad that I am just bawling in pain. I can’t find my approved medications sheet. I have a prescription for Phenergan due to morning sickness. After throwing up because of the pain twice, I took one Phenergan and two Excedrin Migraine pills. I didn’t have anything else for pain, and it was absolutely unbearable.

My question is: I’m 11 weeks pregnant and have NEVER taken any other over the counter or prescription medication while pregnant (except for the Phenergan and my prenatals).

Will taking Excedrin Migraine just that one time harm my baby?

Excedrin Migraine
Generic Name: acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine
Thank you for all the answers.

I know that Tylenol is best, but it was almost midnight, and excedrin migraine was all I had.

I’m really just asking if you think taking it just one time will affect my baby?

Pat answers:

I had a migraine for 4 days. Never had one before and it wouldn’t go away. After they tested me for all the preclampsia stuff they told me to take Excedrin Migraine. They told me that the acetaminophen is fine, the caffeine is okay as long as you don’t go crazy with the coffee, and the aspirin is ok only OCCASIONALLY. It’s better than the stress of having a headache that bad. Don’t use it for every headache, but if it’s wont’ go away with Tylonal, then go ahead. You’ll be fine. :)
